Sugata(configuration) : Hira-zukuri, Shin-no-mune. There is a slight curve. There is Koshi-hi and Bonji (Sanskrit character) carvings in front and reverse side is chiselled with Rendai (lotus pedestal) and Bonji carvings.
Kitae(forging pattern) : Kitae-hada is conspicuous Itame wooden grains mark. The surface is covered in with sparkling Ji-Nie activity that speckles with splitting Yobashiri hard metal granules.The entire jigane forging mark is splendidly active with Itame large wooden grain marks generating an extremely beautiful scene of forging.
Hamon(tempering pattern) : Hamon is Nie based Notare wavy mixing in with Gunome-midare, of which temper line is covered with thick and blight Nie granules, deep in whitish Nioi activity. Thick Nie feet work toward the cutting edge.The entire temper gives off vivid and strong light.
Boshi (tip): The temper of the tip waves like a blaze into small circle then turns back deeply.
Nakago(tang) : Shape of tang is Funazoko (bottom of ship shape) UBU un-altered, Shallow slanted left (Kattesagari) filemarks and round kurijiri heel. One mekugi-ana peg hole. The signature in Omote is engraved fine and slight three charactar that reads TSUNE-IE-SAKU.
Smith TSUNAIE belongs to Odawara Soushu school, who is an elder brother of TSUNAHIRO and YASUKUNI, they had been exclusively worked for Go-HOUJO "
Houjo Ujitsuna" and his son "Houjo Ujiyasu" who were the lords of castle Odawara. It is assumed that TSUNA for TSUNA-IE was given by the lord "Uji-TSUNA". He and his atelier had made and supplied swords to meet with great demands of Houjo or relative Samurais. This length of cutting edge of this tanto is eight-sun and two-bu (24.9cm) long for cutting edge which is assumed as a supplementary dagger (Yoroi-Doshi). Simple but faithful Bonji carvings is a distinctive characteristic of the Odawara-Soushu makers.
The Aikuchi-style koshirae fitting
consists of superb Omoto (Rohdea japonica) design Mitokoro-mono set of Kozuka, Kogai and Menuk - Shakudo copper alloy gold and silver inlay. Kogatana utility knife sighed Gou-shu Sasaki IPPO. There is a grain opening tracing marks along temper line next to Boji charactar in reversed side, however it is mostly well elimitated by a skilled polisher, due to the passage of long period, almost 500 years, it is greatly admired that this tanto has been treasured during many generations, as the family prosperity and a good-luck charm.
Silver Habaki collar. The entire blade is preserved in a shira-saya plain wood mounting.
