Sugata(configuration) : Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune. Standard length of cutting edge, wide in Mihaba on base and there is waist pointed curve, a little on deep side. Wide in Mihaba on base and there is less difference in Mihaba between base and tip, leading to an extended middle tip.(click HERE for super sized image)
Kitae(forging pattern) : Kitae is well-kneaded wooden pattern (Itame-hada) and straight Masame-hada in Shinogi-ji surface. Hiraji surface is covered in sparkling ji-nie glitter that generates darkish small Nie lines along wooden grain so called CHIKEI activity.The entire forging is vivid and clear.
Hamon(tempering pattern) : Hamon is Ko-Nie based, starts with straight Yakidashi, then tall gunome, compound gunome outline like a crab's claws and clove outlines that varies shape and height. Yubashiri hard metal granules from each head of gunome falls irregularly into Hiraji -surface. There are quenched marks on the back ridge in places so called Muneyaki-activity. The interior of temper is filled with misty Nioi and there works with frequent ASHI feet and YOU dots activities. Upper the blade, hamon becomes calm to be shallow NOTARE wave then triple gunomes below Yokote ridge. The configuration is exclusively designed for Iaido practice, the entire steel is full of various activities that comes from skilled steel forging and Hamon quenching is full of broad-minded workmanship.
Boshi (tip): Boshi is wide straight line and upper becomes medium circle indication then turns back deeply connecting to Muneyaki.
JUMYO(Toshinaga) 寿命 school, it's founder was born in Seki town, Mino province in Tensho 8 (1580), real name was Kondo Sukezaemon 近藤助左衛門. He had moved to Kiyosu castle town during Keicho(1596-1614) period and the enjoyed Tango-no-kami 丹後守 title in Kanei 2 (1625). JUMYO school had been prospered in 5 generations during Edo period under the patronage of Owari Tokugawa clans. JUMYO(Toshinaga) 寿命, it exactly means [happy long life] so that most of Samurais treasured JUMYO works.
The subject katana is judged recently as JUMYO by NBTHK during Edo period. Such heroical and brave katana had been made for Samurais with military spirit who preferred martial arts during the early Edo period, unlike the other katanas of flamboyant hamon with an artistic effect. Although there are some visible grain opening flaws in quenching areas in front, those ware are now well eliminated and restored by recent skilled polish and currently in the possible best condition. This katana is solidly made and feels well-balanced on both hands, holding a standard length of cutting edge almost 70cm with an appropriate waist pointed curve which is carefully designed for Iaido practice - full of brave Samurai spirits.
