Sugata(configuration) : Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune. Kasane is thick. Width on base is wide and one of the point is broad as well leading to extended middle point.
Kitae(forging pattern) : Combination of prominent ko-itame(tight wooden grain) and entwined Mokume-hada and Itame-hada flowing grain marks. Jigane is thickly covered in minute ji-nie hard metal granules over the surface of blade. delicate chikei small nie lines which is delicately beautiful.
Hamon(tempering pattern) : Hamon is combination of large and small gunome mixing in with choji-ha(clove outline), deep nioi-kuchi incorporating frequent nie-ashi(lines projecting into the hardened edge) and bruising SUNAGASHI and bright KINSEN activity. The entire tempering is bright and vivid.
Boshi (tip): Straight(sugu), and small circle turn-back. creating JIZOU shape.
Nakago(tang) : UBU unaltered. Osujikai file mark. Round heel(Kurijiri). Two ANA (retaining hole). The signature in Hakiomote is large, thick chiselled eight character that reads De-wa-dai-jo Fuji-wara Kuni-Michi.
The entire blade is brave and massive with thick kasane leading to a broad tip. The tempering pattern varies with large and small gunome.Kunimichi is one of the master smith KUINIHIRO's best pupils, born in 1576 (4th year of Tensho), enjoyed Dewa-daijo title in the 20th year of Keicho.
This is quite healthy and massive wakizashi. It is quite impressive with deep Hamchi and Munemachi. The hiraji forging gives off vivid and bright light so called Jinie and generating Chikei dark metal granules activity that grows from depth of steel. Temper area is filled in with whitish Nioi mist, bright Kinsen lines and brushing Sunagashi activity. Entire hiraji surface and temper gives off sparkling vivid and bright.The entire blade shows a remarkable workmanship of famed smith KUNIMICHI. From the features of signature, especially the fourth character [JO] and the last one [MICHI], this wakizashi should be be judged as a work from 6th - 11th year of Kanei (1629-1634), while his technique had matured greatly.
Another highlight of this wakizashi is a delight set of wakizashi mount
that consist of original old white ray skin/black hilt cord wrap (tsumami maki style) of which Fuchi/Kashira signed a famed artisan NAGATSUNE, a set of utensils for the tea ceremony motif, Shakudo Ishime-ji surface, Takabori, gold, silver and copper inlay, menuki is Shakudo Yobori/gold inlay Chinese design, Tuba is copper YAMAGANE dragon/clouds with Shakudo alloy fukurin rim, Kozuka and Kojiri both are Iron ground silver inlay Dragonfly design. Both wakizashi and a full set of koshirae mount exhibit supreme workmanship and it maintains well an extremely good condition.
