Sugata(configuration) : Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune. Mihaba on base is wide and there is shallow curvature, leading to a medium kissaki. (click HERE for super sized image)
Kitae(forging pattern) : Kitae-hada is itame wooden grain mixing in with flawing stream marks. Sparkling glitter so called Ji-nie activity throughout Hiraji-surface that generates conspicuous Chikei scene (thick and darkish Nie hard metal lines).
Hamon(tempering pattern) : Hamon stars with long straight temper so called "Kyo Yakidashi" and zig-zag Gunome-midare, sharpened up TOGARI-ha. Upper the Monouchi area, temper becomes calms to be shallow wavy. Temper edge covered in sparkling Nie and Sunagashi darkish Nie lines works on gorge of gunome, vivid and filled in generous energy that resembles to the works of Soshu-school.
Boshi (tip): The temper of the tip is straight with "slack off" indication into KOMARU small circle so called "MISHINA-style boshi".
Nakago(tang) : UBU original, Slanting left (o-sujikai) filemarks. Iriyama V-shape heel. The signature in front starts with 16-petals chrysanthemum crest, an official district title Izumi-no-kami 和泉守, school name Rai 来, smith name KINMICHI 金道.
Frontier of MISHINA school in Yamashiro province is smith KANEMICHI 兼道 (9th generation of Shizu Saburo KANEUJI) who had exclusively worked for a general [Takeda Shingen], moved from Mino to Yamashiro along with his four sons, [Iga-no-kami KINMICHI], [Izumi-no-kami KINMICHI], [Tanba-no-kami YOSHIMICHI] and [Echu-no-kami MASATOSHI] in 1592 (Bunroku 2nd). They established one of the largest sword smiths lineage family so called MISHINA school against Umetada-Myoju school and Kunihiro lineage.
The subject Katana is the typical work by the 3rd. generation Izumi-no-kami RAI KINMICHI who was active Enpo period (middle of 17th century). It shows typical shape during Enpo (1673-80), full of military Samurai spirits. Forging pattern shows conspicuous ITAME wooden grain marks mixing in with masame wavy indication, where sparkling hard metal granules (NIE) splits over vividly and thick darkish NIE lines gush our against blinking NIE whereas Shinogi-ji area shows outstanding Masame straight grains. Temper is NIE based, Gunome with Togari sharpened up indication and the interior of temper is full of whitish Nioi mist where works with delicate SUNAGASHI blushing marks. Temper of tip (BOSHI) calms to be straight shallow wavy "Mishina-style" with gently turns back. The entire blade is full of generous activity vivid and blight which was strongly influenced by high-ranking Soshu works of Shizu Saburo KANEUJI in the Medieval period and shows generous and energetic impression.
