Awataguchi Fujiwara Tadatsuna, first generation, a father of Asai Mandayu-the second generation Tadatsuna-was born in Himeji in Harima province and had moved to Kyoto. In his later period he and his son (Asai mandayu) had moved to Osaka. He had built up a solid reputation with his son, one of the best sword smiths in the early Edo period in Osaka. This is a quite rare hira-zukuri wakizashi of Tadatsuna. The jigane is quite impressive with thick and whitish boiling out precise nie granules. Chikei (small nie lines) stir lively. Tempering pattern is beautiful clove out line that is activated with frequent long Nioi-based ashi feet and sunagashi nie-lines works in the interior of temper. The entire temper is filled with Ko-nie and Nioi activity, impressively snow-white, bright and vivid. This is probably one of the best works of Hirazukuri Wakizashi of first gneration Tadatsuna.
