Sugata(configuration) :Long Hira-zukuri tanto, low Iori-mune. Wide in Mihaba
with shallow curve and upper Fukura in full.(click HERE for
super sized image) Kitae(forging pattern) : Kitae-hada is conspicuous Itame wooden grain marks mixing in with large mokume burl, swirl and flowing Masame straight grain marks partially. Entire steel is darkish blue and is covered in speckled Ji-nie (hard metal granules) that gives off diffused reflection with mottled effect, so called Bou-Utsuri. Hamon(tempering pattern) : Hamon is Ko-nie (medium Nie) based, small-gunome, angular indication mixed. The interior works with activities such as YOU dots, KINSUJI metalic Nie lines and Sunagashi blushing marks. Boshi (tip): The temper of the tip comes in irregular gunome-midare. Hakikake blushing up indication and turns back deep. Nakago(tang) : UBU original, One Mekugiana retaining hole. KURIJIRI round heel shape. Horizontal (kiri) file marks, signed Uta KUNINARI. Uta school, the frontier KUNIMITSU had come from Uta-gun, Yamato province early 14th century (kamakura period) to Echu province. Uta school had been flourished throughout Muromachi period. It's workmanship shows a mixture of Yamato and Soshu-den, outstanding Itame, darkish steel and Nie based temper. The subject tanto is an unusual example of existing works by KUNINARI. The blade still remains very good condition for the age 550 years. Gold plated copper habaki collar, preserved in a Shira-saya plain wood mounting. |
