Sugata(configuration) : Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune. Kasane is thick and motohaba is wide leading to middle tip.(Click HERE for higher resolution of the entire blade)
Kitae(forging pattern) : Hada is flowing itame-hada and conspicuous masame-hada on shinogi-ji surface.
Hamon(tempering pattern) : A combination of gunome(zigzag) and togari-da(sharpened). Tempering edge is covered in coarse nie and the interior of temper is active with gunome-ashi and frequent sunagashi brushing. There is muneyaki(tempering on the back ridge).
Boshi(tip) : Boshi on omote side is straight tempered and then hakikake small circle deeply turn back and ura side is straight small circle deeply turn back.
Nakago(tang) : Nakago is unaltered. Osujikai(diagonal file marks descending sharply to the right). One mekugi-ana(retaining peg). Ha-agari Iriyama shape(sharpened heel raging sharply on the blade side). There is a bit mass on the ridge, signed Echizen-kuku-ju KANETANE (live in Echizen province KANETANE).
The first smith KANETANE in Echizen province had come from Mino province and lived in Ichijou-dani valley. This is a work of 4th generation of KANETANE during genroku period in the end of 17th century. In compare with his former generation, the entire blade is more massive, mihaba became wider and thick kasane with ordinal curvature leading to middle kissaki extended. The tempering is activated with coarse nie works that generates Gunome-ashi and frequent sunagashi. Old polish and entire blade is healthy and in sound condition. Gold plated double layer habaki collar in Shira-Saya plain wood mounting.
The black lacquered wakizashi koshirae fitting comprising : black lacquered saya (sheath), tsuka(hilt) covered in old white shark skin in which part of small drops fall off and wrapped in old silk cord which has been soiled for such long period. Fuchi/kashira is iron ground, bamboo motif gold iroe inlay. Menuki is Shakudo yobori chrysanthemum motif gold iroe and Iron ground cherryblossom flower openwork tsuba (copper fukurin rim). The entire fitting is exchanged with a recently made sheath, the hilt is however maintains old and original condition in good atmosphere.
