| Blade construction (kengyo) : Shinogi-zuruki, Iori-mune. Even it's Suriage
shortened status, there is rather deep curve standing firmly in wide base
with large Hiraji and there is less difference in Mihaba between base and
tip. The entire shape is wide and heroically made. (click HERE for high resolution of
the blade photograph) Forging pattern (kitae hada) : Kitae hada is fine and delicate Itame hada mixing in with partial small Mokume and flowing Masame hada marks. The entire hiraji is covered in with fine ji-nie (hard metal granules over the surface of the blade) and shows whitish utsuri reflection. Tempering pattern (hamon) : Hamon is fine ko-nie base, Suguha, small gunome, delicate ASHI frequently works in the interior and YOU dots floating. Habuchi temper edge shows solidly tight indication, where delicate Sunagashi blushing and Uchinoke activity works. Temper of tip (boshi) : Boshi is straight along Fukura curve with small circle turn back a bit deep gently. Tang (Nakago) : Nakago is O-suriage cut, unsigned. Ha-agari round heel shape. One Mekugi-ana peg hole. Upper file marks is Katte-sagari slanting left-word slightly and lower becomes Sujikai slanting left. Mihara in Bingo province, where had produced fine steel since Kamakura period, was strongly influenced by the powerful shrines in central Yamato therefore Mihara swordsmithes had followed the typical Yamato school technique. This heroic katana, although it is Suriage shortened, is still wide and stands firmly on base, the upper tip of grooves ends a bit lower, shows the major character of Nanbokucho 14th century. The subject Katana shows an profound features such as Hotsure fray, YOU dots, Sunagashi blushing indication of Yamato, against Utsuri reflections standing out in Hiraji surface. This prominent Tachi has been treasured by powerful legitimate Samurais in generations and still remains an excellent condition over the 650 years.
