Sugata(configuration) : Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune. Mihaba is wide and there is moderate curvature leading to a large tip. The blade is long and heroically-proportioned sword which holds an original shape. (click HERE for higher resolution)
Kitae(forging pattern) : Kitae-hada is Itame-hada (wooden grain) and mixing in with large Mokume (burl grain) marks, of which Hiraji surface is covered in speckled ji-nie that generates darkish swelling Nie lines so called CHIKEI actrivity.
Hamon(tempering pattern) : Hamon forms generally mixture of small clove, zigzag and sharped up shape, of which some slanted or varies in height and shape, splitting up into Hiraji-surface so called Tobiyaki. The interior of temper is rich in Sunagashi and Kinsen activity, gaily decorated.
Boshi (tip): The temper of tip is Midarekomi irregular lines, blushing up indication like a blaze.
Nakago(tang) : Unsigned in original with two mekugi-ana retaining holes (one is filled).
MOTOYUKI with Kawachi no kami title was born in Bungo province in 1642 (19th year of Kanei), introduced himself as a descendant of the ancient master YUKIHIRA in early Kamakura period (12th C.). Enjoyed Kawachi-no-kami title in 1677 (5th year of Enpo) and had moved to Karatsu town in Hizen province, later again moved up to Bushu(Edo) province in 1693 (6th year of Genroku) to study under Shoshu TSUNAHIRO to learn Soshu-den technique. He had been enjoyed a word of MOTO from Hon-ami family to change smith name MOTOYUKI. He lived to a great age 90 years old. This katana indeed shows an typical Shoshu-den school techinique and has been judged as a work of MOYOYUKI which is agreed with.
The accompanying Brown Tataki-Nuri style Uchigatana Koshirae is contemporary made which consists of: White rayskin/black logenze silk cord wrap hilt, contemporary Silver Fuchi/Kashira (Big waves), Antique copper gold iroe plated Dragon Menuki hilt ornaments, Antique Iron Tsuba Sansui scene(91x87mm) and Iron Kojiri heel.
