Sugata(configuration) : Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune. Mihaba on base is wide for the length and there is shallow but upper pointed curve leading to a middle tip. Heavy on hands and massive volume in Hiraji and thick in kasane. (click HERE for super sized image)
Kitae(forging pattern) : Kitae-hada is fine and well kneaded Mokume (wooden burl) hada mixing in with flowing forging marks both on base and upper just below yokote ridge. The surface is generally fine and beautifully forged which is covered in with sparkling Ji-Nie (hard metal granules) activity.
Hamon(tempering pattern) : Hamon is wide straight base, starts with tight nioi based, double temper, frayed, and then upper the blade, Nie/Nioi deeper and brighter like a track of comet where generates YUBASHIRI (temper splits over the surface) which forms gunome zig-zag temper at the peak vividly bright.
Boshi (tip): The temper of the tip straight into medium circle then turns back deeply.
Nakago(tang) : UBU un-altered, horizontal(kiri) filemarks and Ha-agari V-shape heel. One mekugi-ana. The signature in hakiomote is located upper shinogiji side, long character that reads Buzen ju TOMOYUKI.
The frontier TOMOYUKI in Saikaido region was active in Bungo province in the middle of 14 th C. His lineages had flourished during Muromachi period and three generations in Bungo and one in Buzen (Kokura) in the early of Edo period.The subject dignified wakizashi is surely one of the superb works by the TOMOYUKI in Buzen province. In view of base starting point of cutting edge, both temper and back ridge are quite deep and seems almost remains an original temper when it was made, in extremely good condition and is really well taken care of.
The
original old koshirae fitting consists of Fuchi/Kashira : Shakudo ground nanako surface Chrysanthemum flowers/leaves/a cricket, Menuki : Shakudo ground yobori Chrysanthemum flowers/leaves, Kozuka : Suaka copper polish surface Chrysanthemum flowers/leaves katagiri plow and Tsuba : Iron ground openwork with Suaka copper rim Peony and Leo design.
All these metal furniture are well-coordinated and each in very fine quality.
Old copper double layer habaki (gold plated). Shira-Saya plain wood mounting included.
