Sugata(configuration) : Unokubi-zukuri, Iori-mune. Mihaba is average and there is a thick volume on base, no curve. The entire blade is neat, trim, massive and rich in hiraniku. There is Naginata-hi grooves on both sides. (click HERE for higher resolution)
Kitae(forging pattern) : Kitae-hada is well-kneaded Itame-hada (wooden grain) and mixing in with the swelling masame hada pattern.
Hamon(tempering pattern) : Hamon is wide suguha (straight) temper line. There is an indication of double temper lines activity (NIJU-ha) along temper edge.
Boshi (tip): The temper of the tip is small circle turn back and there is an indication sharped up activity(TOGARI) in the tip.
Nakago(tang) : Unaltered (UBU) and one original peg retaining hole. Filemark is horizontal (Kiri). The signature in hakiomite is two large character that reads TADA KUNI.
The smith TADAKUNI who had enjoyed Shinano-Daijo title in Inaba province, now in Tottori prefecture, had been flourished during Edo period and belonged to KUNIHIRO lineage. This tanto was made by 8th generation TADAKUNI who was active during BUNKA period during early 19 th century. The blade is just completed from fresh polish to eliminate grain opening mark about 20mm above Hamachi in reversed side and now it is well-calmed down and not outstanding. Willows Makie lacquered sheath silver metal furniture (Puppies Menuki) Aikuchi Koshirae is possible an original fitting when tanto was made. Makie lacquered work willows is elaborately refined and little puppies' menuki hilt ornament is an another highlight of this koshirae, to offer an easy delivery and handed down from generation to generation.
