Sugata(configuration) : Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune, shallow curvature, heavy on hand. Kasane is extremely thick and there is abundant volume in hiraniku and deep in hamachi and munemachi ends at the starting points of cutting edge and back ridge, leading to a clear-cut middle tip.(click HERE for high resolution image) Kitae(forging pattern) : Kitae is fine ko-itame covered in thick and uniform blinking Ji-nie hard metal granules over the surface and Chikei thick and small darkish metal grows from surface. Hamon(tempering pattern) : Hamon is wide belt straight temper line, upper the blade, it shows an indication of shallow wavy line and stronger the nie, fray and double temper lines appears so called Hotsure or Niju-ha activity. Nakago(tang) : Unaltered(UBU). Ha-agari IRIYAMA heel shape. One retaining hole. Osujikai slanting and Kesho horizontal filemarks. The signature in front is chiselled with the place of work [KOUYO] and follows smith name [SUKENORI]. Boshi(tip) : Shallow wavy and there shows Bruising (hakikake) activity then small circle turns back.. Smith SUKENORI was born in A.D.1827 (10 th year of Bunsei) in Kai province, real name Tamura Yoshiji. From the record of encyclopedia, his very initial works were made on around 3 rd year of Bunsei and also made in Sagami province, his latest work are chiselled the date of year 29 the year of Meiji, passed in A.D.1910, was 82 years old. The subject Katana is long and heavy, which shows a typical style of Katana during the last stage of Edo period, and from it's signature, it is understood that this Katana was made during Kieou period, when he was around 40 years old in the prime of sword smith life. This sword had been sealed up more than 100 years at an old treasure-house and sent for the restoration by Tokugawa art, just completed from fresh polish with a new plain wood mounting (shirasaya) and a brand new silver Habaki collar.
