Sugata(configuration) : Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune. Wide in mihaba on base and there is waist pointed curve (Koshizori-indication) leading to a broad tip.(click HERE for super sized image)
Kitae(forging pattern) : Kitae is well-kneaded wooden pattern (Itame-hada), mixing in with flowing masame hada (straight grain mark) along cutting side. The entire Hada is dark bluish forged with striking forging Itame mark is impressive and is filled in an old atmosphere.
Hamon(tempering pattern) : Hamon is Nie based, deep Nioi mist, Gunome and Togari-ha and clove outline which varies in shape and wide in height. There is various works of thick feet (ashi) in the interior of temper and filled in clear nioi. There are rich works of strong NIE's activity such as Ginsen, Inazuma and Sunagashi (thick nie lies)
Boshi (tip): Boshi is wavy irregular pattern with brushing up indication (Hakikake).
Nakago(tang) : Unsigned. The tang is OSURIAGE (shortened off about 10 cm). Three Mekugi-ana (retaining holes), two is filled. Kattesagari (slanted left) file marks. A shallow kurijiri round heel shape.
UDA school, frontier KUNIMITSU had been moved from Uda town in Yamato province to Echu province. His son, the first smith KUNIMUNE was learned from famed smith NORISHIGE had reformed an innovative workmanship which is mixture of Yamato and Soshu school. The subject katana is attributed to a work of KUNITSUGU in Uta school, during end of Nanbokucho/Early Muromachi period was possibly made as long Tachi up to Two shaku Seven sun (over 80 cm) even more, very powerful and brave and then it's tang was shortened by the founders because combat style had been changed from mounted soldier to foot battle. Forging/tempering method is filled in an good old atmosphere and workmanship is hidden an awe-inspiring power. The entire blade well remains a rich volume and vivid temper in the passage of almost 600 years.
